Designing the Perfect Playroom

Hello everyone! I’m Sarah from Just The Bees Knees, back with another inspiring mood board for you! One of my absolute favorite spaces to design are kids rooms. Kids are just overflowing with creativity, so I think their spaces should reflect their budding imaginations and help encourage creative thought through play. PLUS you can stretch your creativity and create fun, bold, happy and playful rooms filled with unexpected elements, such as this red ceiling I painted in my sons room, or a nursery with bold black and white details. This month, I’m going to focus on the most fun kid space to design….the Playroom! What a fun playroom! Love the lodge theme for kids, boys and girls. Remodelaholic.com

Since I have boys, I decided to design my playroom mood board with an outdoorsy lodge feel. It’s a more grown-up version of the woodland theme thats been so popular lately! But before I dive into my design, lets get inspired by some other great spaces!

When designing a child’s playroom, there are some basic elements you should factor in, such as toy storage, play surfaces, etc., but with a little imagination and a lot of ingenuity, you can take those basic elements and make them into super cool features that will take your room over the top! Lets take a look at some fun ideas!

playhouse - woodland lodge theme playroom ideas

Have a little outdoorsman in your life? Why not build him an indoor tree-house?

modern playroom storage

Every playroom needs a playtable. Why not take your to the next level like AnaBode did and paint the surface with chalk paint and build custom toy storage underneath?

Magnet boards like this one hung at a kids level are fun and decorative. I also love how they supplied the kids art supplies in a glass case hung out of reach. Such a fun and graphic space!

add gymnastic rings for a super fun playroom

Have a budding gymnast?! These rings look super fun!

Or  take a cue from The Novogratz and install a fun slide the whole family can enjoy!

tee-pee in the playroom

This modern teepee makes for a fun hideaway or cozy reading nook.

art display for kids

This is a creative and easy solution to hang all your kids artwork they created in their playroom!

So now that we’ve got the creative juices flowing, lets talk about decorating these playrooms! What I love about the rooms above, is that they don’t have a strong theme, but the design is influenced by the kids interests and ideas. The thing with kids is that they grow….and fast! One day they might be obsessed with dinosaurs, the next they move on to something different, so as much as its important to have fun decorating, make sure you create a space that will grow with them too.

Perfect for outdoors loving little ones! This lodge-themed playroom is a great blend of kid function and grown up style. Full list of sources! Remodelaholic.com

Tips for Decorating a Fun and Stylish Playroom

TeePees are SO much fun in a playroom, and this bold striped one pairs beautifully with the navy cross rug. And how adorable are the bear and raccoon pillows?! As you can see, most of the pieces I chose are timeless and can grow with your kids as they get older and start to become more interested in having a space to hang out with their friends and play video games, but the design of the room still has a fun whimsical feel to it.

Adequate storage is also a must! Fun bins and baskets are a great way to corral all the toys, and a classic bookcase is the perfect solution for displaying cool toys. As they get older, the toys can be replaced with books or sports trophies.

Kids also spend most of their time playing on the ground, so lots of soft layered rugs, floor pillows and poufs are a comfortable alternative to standard seating.

I could go on and on about fun spaces for kids, but I’d love to hear form you. What kind of playroom would you design?! Or more importantly….what kind of playroom would your kids like to hang out in?!

I’d like to thank Cassity and the Remodelaholic team for having me again today! It’s always a pleasure hanging out with you guys and indulging my love of designing mood boards. Stop by my blog, introduce yourself and say hi! I love to meet new friends:)

Sarah
